Sustainability Overview and Examples in Clubs

Sustainability refers to meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainability is an issue that companies and businesses have addressed in recent years and has finally made its way to professional sports. For example, a football club in England named Forest Green Rovers has shown their efforts in becoming sustainable by reducing their environmental impact. Specifically, they have implemented solar panels on the outside of their stadium as well as using rainwater for part of their irrigation system. Most professional sports teams in the United States use artificial turf as their playing surface. This surface has been identified as a direct link to causing cancer to individuals. However, in hopes of becoming more sustainable, the Forest Green Rovers have established an organic playing surface in which they practice and play matches on. Sustainability is making its way to other sports across the United States as well, for instance the Seattle Mariners have implemented a compositing program as well as the removal of plastic straws at their stadium. Implementing sustainable practices is very beneficial to stakeholders because it will increase the likeliness of that franchise and therefore boost revenues and profits. I believe that in the next two to three years, the board of directors of all of sports through the world will mandate that teams implement sustainable practices throughout their franchise. Have you seen any sustainability incentives that other teams have taken, either through attending events or reading about it on the news?

  1. It will be interesting to see moving forward how other organizations in Europe and around the world make more of an effort towards sustainability. Forest Green Rovers has provided an excellent framework that can be used as a model for other clubs looking to make an improvement in their sustainability methods. I think solar panels are a simple and effective way to start this movement, and should be accessible for many clubs to implement into their stadiums and training facilities. In an era where people are becoming more conscientious about their actions, it is important for sports organizations to continue to make improvements regarding their sustainability practices.

    1. I agree with your comment Robert! I am excited to see what the future holds with teams effort in sustainability. We wanted to show examples of how sustainability has not only impacted FC Barcelona but other teams across Europe. I agree that teams should make the effort to a sustainable enviornment.

  2. It is great to see professional sports organizations from around the globe start taking initiative in promoting sustainability and reducing their carbon footprint. As you stated, there are so many different/unique routes organizations can take to promote environmentally sustainability from improving their public transportation systems to even switching to more sustainable drinking utensils. The possibilities seem to be limitless in terms of how teams can incorporate these socially responsible practices. I am very excited to see how this trend develops as more and more sports teams/clubs continue to raise the bar/standard in implementing innovative/environmentally sustainable practices within their stadium and outlying infrastructure.

  3. I really enjoyed your blog post, it is great to see sports organizations take an initiative in to making everything that they do sustainable. As climate change worsen throughout the world, there needs to be a swift shift in how every sports team in the world operates and invests. Stadiums are of the biggest drivers of this push and making them sustainable is an important way to ensure an organization is putting a green future at the top of their priority list. If teams are to neglect their worldly duty to invest in a greener future, then who will? My question to you is: Do you think that there should be some sort of judicial oversight board that can judge European clubs on their sustainability? Secondly, would you give the authority to this board to punish these clubs if they aren't fulfilling their sustainability pledge?

  4. I really liked how you took on this view of sustainability in sports. I was unaware that the Forest Green Rovers team has taken action with sustainability and implementing solar panels and using rainwater. Although a lot of sports team and people understand the impact and necessity for sustainability, a lot of the teams and individuals do not take action. I also agree with you that in the next few years the board of directors of all sports throughout the world will mandate that teams implement sustainable practices throughout their franchise. I haven't seen much about sustainability incentives. As I stated, I know that a lot of teams believe in sustainability but do not care enough to take serious action. I hope to see more of it in the future for the stake of society and the future of sports.

  6. Sports clubs like Forest Green Rovers are setting the example by using eco-friendly strategies like using solar panels and organic playing fields to lessen their ecological impact. Sustainability in sports is becoming more and more popular. The Seattle Mariners' efforts to compost and do away with plastic straws are an example of how this movement is expanding globally and how sports teams are putting the environment first. These programs highlight the value of sustainability in contemporary sports management since they not only help the environment but also improve the teams' financial success and reputations. It is anticipated that the professional sports industry will see a dramatic change in how sports franchises run as the push towards sustainability will intensify and possibly become a mandatory requirement for regulating bodies. - Everett Levin
